Coldd Lassi Aur Chicken Masala Review

Poor performances ruined the show. The storyline was good. The twists were good but the performances were not even close to good. You won’t see Divyanka Tripathi giving expressions, she is only seen making faces. Her frustration phase was the one that needed to be handled with utmost care but she couldn’t do justice, neither to that particular phase nor to her character, Nitya. Every time I saw that particular phase of these two characters where they meet after 8 years and are clearly very much still in love but are separated and cannot handle each other’s presence, it took me back to the Pakistani drama Humsafar. Both, Mahira Khan and Fawaad Ali Khan had beautifully portrayed those complex emotions – the hatred, the frustration, bottled up emotions, complaints, and unexpressed love. You could feel them choking on emotions due to unresolved issues and unspoken words. 

Coldd Lassi aur Chicken Masala demanded that kind of intensity. It looked like neither Rajeev Khandelwal nor Divyanka Tripathi could understand what their characters are going through. Divyanka Tripathi didn’t look like a woman who has bottled up a lot of negative emotions and hence has turned into a bitter, frustrated, and an angry woman. On the other hand, Rajeev Khandelwal never in the entire series looked guilty of committing adultery. His attitude was much like, ‘Haan kiya cheat, toh? Main mard hu…’ 

To be very honest, the ‘chapriness’ doesn’t suit Rajeev Khandelwal. In the flashback scenes, he never did look cute. He only looked ‘cheap.’ You keep wondering why would any decent, ambitious woman fall in love with a cheap guy like him? You could still understand the ‘falling in love’ part but why would she continue staying with a guy like him? Since the beginning, he displayed all the traits of a man who is with her only for sex. It never looked like love, in the first place. (I wouldn’t have said what I just said if the series would have portrayed him negatively, but he was still the hero)

The end was the only hope I had. Sometimes, the end turns around the whole story and all you remember was how it ended and you instantly forget everything else. The conclusion then is that the series was good. For web series, the last impression could really be the lasting impression. The writers and the makers screwed up the end big time. 

When Nitya finally comes to Delhi for reconciliation, she finds that Vikram is with her cousin (again), Seema – the woman he had committed adultery with. This time, Vikram doesn’t even explain the situation to her. When asked, he demands that instead of asking for an explanation, she trusts him and let go of the past. I mean, are you out of your mind, dude? Do you even know what are you talking about? 

Anyway, Nitya still tries to convince herself. She doesn’t demand and explanation and tries to kiss him. But she FORTUNATELY realises that she cannot trust him anymore. Good job, lady. (Guess what? Even the audience is not told why was Vikram and Seema together in Delhi. Superb, isn’t it? The makers thought we would trust their decision of keeping us in the dark)

In short, if you had high expectations from this show, I am sorry to tell you that Coldd Lassi aur Chicken Masala is not worth your time. Order your lassi and chicken masala from somewhere else. What Rajeev Khandelwal and Divyanka Tripathi served wasn’t at all tasty. 

P.S. I am still wondering what was the motive behind Manira’s swimming scene? The way camera focused only on her butt is what we call “objectifying women.” Another thing that disturbed me was the smoking scenes. Instead of displaying warning on the screen that ‘Smoking is Injurious to Health,’ stop having such scenes. They were not even needed. It definitely wasn’t the story’s demand. When the makers couldn’t focus on the story’s actual demands, they shouldn’t have focused on adding unnecessary details as well.
